Question: Since people are returning to the work space, my office is throwing a holiday party for all employees but having your vaccination is not required and I definitely don’t want to put my family and myself at risk. I think it would be fun to go but first, I would like to talk with the office manager about my concerns. What should I do?

Answer: It’s really difficult to deal with vaccination policies when it comes to everyone’s different views. It’s important that we understand our own comfort levels when it comes to social events, especially in this period of change. We can’t expect people to naturally adapt to our boundaries. Therefore, if you aren’t comfortable with the office party, not attending might be the best solution. You could also choose to wear a mask during the party.

When reflecting on situations that involve potential conflict, it is important to reflect on the situation from many perspectives and not just yours even as you make a decision for yourself.  If your office manager sets the guidelines, it might be hard to change that as an employee, but you have the choice to decide whether or not it’s best for you to go. You can host your own party and send out invitations that vaccination is required to attend so that way you’re setting your own guidelines. Or, if other co-workers agree with you, the manager might consider your request to change the guideline. Remember, in everything concerning you, the ball is always in YOUR court to decide what you can do for yourself!  Happy Holidays!
